Karen's beautiful music

Most of you will know our T'ai Chi friend and fellow boat dweller Karen Grace, but you may not know her wonderful music. She has asked me to share this with the blog readers here. Karen is singing and playing guitar on this song, and Mark features on banjo! Enjoy.

Beautiful pots by Rosemary

Yesterday I bought two beautiful bowls from Rosemary van Miert (who used to be a Thursday night regular, and many years ago taught Mark Short Form). You may have had the pleasure of pushing hands with her before now. She makes stunning pots, bowls and gorgeous mugs and cups too. Her studio is in South London and she can be found at www.instagram.com/rosemarypots I have ordered a larger bowl in this style for a dear one.

Maybe you need some Christmas goods that are actually good. Message me if you want her other contact details.

Fleet Footing details

Fleet Footing is a downloadable work combining music, maps and gentle interactive performance with a walk charting the course of London’s lost river. Take the walk any time you like, do it in stages, or if you’re not in London, you could map an imaginary Fleet onto the landscape wherever you are and go for a walk with the album anyway. It uses binaural recording so is specially made for listening to on headphones.

The Fleet has flowed into the Thames for thousands of years, turning a Roman watermill, transporting convicts to the colonies, hosting health spas and bear baiting and slums. It’s largely underground now, but if you know where to look - and if you listen hard enough - you can still find her flowing beneath your feet. The Thames Tideway Scheme will soon be diverting the Fleet straight into a new super sewer - improving water quality in the Thames (yay!) but ending a conversation older than London. At this end of an era, Fleet Footing celebrates and mourns the Fleet and all those who’ve lived and died along her banks.

Download the album and maps, get your walking boots on and go find that river.

(Just got this from Sarah. I will be there on 3rd August.)

The Secret Books

I am heading out to a bookshop today to buy my classmate Marcel Theroux's new book 'The Secret Books'. Here's a great short interview with him about it, available for the next 6 days.

His last two books 'Strange Bodies' and the superb 'Far North' are two of my favourite novels of the millennium so far. Christmas gifts sorted: buy all three and get them signed at class...

Marcel's most recent 'Unreported World' aired this week on Channel 4 and is available on catch up.

Unreported World

I just spotted in the TV guide that our Tuesday class colleague Marcel has his latest documentary airing tomorrow on Channel 4 at 7.30pm. His programmes (and books) are superb.

Psychoyogi gig

Here's another gig from Hackney Chris, who now studies in North London with Verne.

19 September 2016

Psychoyogi gig

From Chris Sanson...
Psychoyogi are playing at Biddle Bros. on Friday, 30 September, supported by Infernal Contraption and London Beat Club. The whole bimbang kadoozer will start about 20:00 and Psychoyogi will play from 22:00-ish for an hour or so (as ever, all times are ish).

Biddle Bros. is at 88 Lower Clapton Road, London E5 0QR (plenty of buses and trains nearby) and admission is free.

Psychoyogi on this occasion is:
Chris Ramsing (lead vocals, guitar, composer/songwriter and generally Main Man)
Chris Sansom (bass, vocals)
Ravi Low-Beer (drums)
and just possibly Jonas Golland (percussion) though that’s yet to be confirmed

For a taste (with added horns and whatnot - and I’m only playing bass on the latest album, Shrine):
psychoyogi.com

We're also at the Birds Nest on Thursday 10 November, but that’s a way off yet and you’ll hear about it nearer the time.

Non-Violent or Compassionate Communication

Alison from the Culter class is keen to set up a group to practice Non-Violent Communication.

NVC is a way of communication that expresses our own needs and encourage others to express theirs too so the compassion works both ways.  It was invented by Marshall Rosenberg but has been taken up by lots of other people since then.

The plan is to have a weekend workshop in Aberdeen with an invited professional trainer then follow up with a regular self-led group probably once a month.  If you're interested, then please let Alison know, or contact me davina [at] greatrivertaichi [dot] co [dot] uk and I'll pass your details on to her.

Update: Marshall Rosenberg was featured on Great Lives on Radio 4 earlier this month. You can listen again here  http://bbc.in/2bMkh7s

17 May 2016

Psychoyogi gig tomorrow

Yes, we’re expanding our horizons beyond Deptford with a gig at the Montague Arms, 289 Queens Rd, New Cross, London, SE15 2PA next Wednesday, 18 May.

There are three bands playing, of which we’re last (although we’re only supposed to be doing 35 minutes - we’re hoping to squeeze in a little more): Portia Winters, Rantipols, Psychoyogi. We’ll be playing some time after 22:00. I imagine the whole evening will start between 20:00 and 21:00.

Psychoyogi on this occasion is:
Chris Ramsing (lead vocals, guitar, composer/songwriter and generally Main Man)
Chris Sansom (bass, some backing vocals)
Ravi Low-Beer (drums)

Ten days later - Sat 28 May - we’re back at Biddle Bros in Hackney, then on the 30th we’re at Vinyl record shop in (guess where) Deptford. More details of those gigs to follow.

TARA Approach Courses 2016 in Aberdeen

Taught by Anneke Stolte MSc MRSS

The TARA Approach uses gentle holding of points on the body (to the Extraordinary Meridians) to restore our capacity to cope with overwhelming experiences.
The TARA Approach has its roots in Jin Shin, a “sister” healing art of Shiatsu based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and the 5 Element system.
In the TARA Approach, created by neuropsychologist Dr Stephanie Mines, the energy medicine component (Jin Shin) is integrated with an understanding of the physiological and neurological impacts of shock and trauma.  With the use of touch as well as language we restore health and release essence.

Workshop One: Self Care with The TARA Approach: “Self Shiatsu” for stress and trauma
This introductory course is for anyone who would like to learn how to balance the nervous system and restore its innate integrity after it has been overwhelmed or overloaded.
There are 26 points on the body that are particularly powerful energy centres. In this workshop we will learn how we can use our hands to touch these energy centres and bring balance and reorganisation to the nervous system. We will practice simple self care treatments (Flows) which we can use on ourselves and others and incorporate in our Shiatsu or other healing practice.
The Self Care course is self-contained but it is also a pre-requisite for Modules One and Two.
23-24 April 2016, 10am-5pm
Cost £105 or £80 for those repeating the course.  Self Care handbook: £10

Workshop Two: Module One: Pulse, the Ordinary Meridians, and Healing Trauma
The focus of this weekend is how to diagnose and heal Trauma by treating the twelve Meridians at Extraordinary Meridian level. We will learn to listen to the Pulse as a tool of diagnosis (using a simplified pulse listening system) and will be practicing the Flows of the twelve Meridians. We will practice treatments on each other.
7-8 May 2016, 10am-5pm
Cost £105 or £80 for those repeating the course.  Module One handbook: £10

Workshop Three: Module Two: The Rivers of Splendour and the treatment of Shock
This weekend will focus on the Extraordinary Meridians, the eight “Rivers of Splendour". They present a deeper level at which to treat Shock and Trauma. We will be deepening and expanding our Pulse listening skills and will practice treatments on each other. We will practice listening, empathy and observational skills along with the use of language in therapeutic contexts.
11-12 June 2016, 10am-5pm
Cost £105 or £80 for those repeating the course.  Module Two handbook: £10.

When booking all three courses together: £290 excluding handbooks.

For information and booking: laurashiatsu@hotmail.com  Tel. 01224 662878

Venue for all three courses: Love Yoga, 42 Union Terrace, Aberdeen AB10 1TP
