News re classes during lockdown in England

After the England Covid rules were changed last night, and Mark had thoroughly read the govt guidelines, I spoke to Mark about his classes until the end of this new lockdown. Sadly, there will be no classes in Tooting at Trinity Hall until this phase of lockdown ends.

Online classes resume this week, details are on the previous post. There will not be a replacement Long Form class on Tuesdays, as the Long Form Zoom class on Thursdays is intended to do this.

A 1 hr Warm ups, chi kung, salutations and Short Form class runs each Wednesday morning with me, live and available recorded.

Left side and Marks's new in depth Short Form Zoom classes will alternate, and begin next week or the week after on Mondays. I am awaiting dates.

Contact me if you would like the links to these.

Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and evenings, as well as various times in the rest of the week, are free for your 121 and small group Skype lessons with Mark. He encourages you to get together with fellow students from your classes and book a session with him, or to have a 121 when you want, so that your study can continue. I am hoping Mark will film the Left Side soon. We were about to organise a date to do this when the announcement of new lockdown came... more soon.

On a personal note, I am lucky that a few months before Covid struck UK, I had already been offered long term work, just an hour a day of online work for an excellent nature organisation. This simple life change has meant that along with teaching taichi weekly by Zoom, and being paid for my art and other teaching, that despite all my workshops in UK, Ireland and Sweden being cancelled, I have been able to stay afloat (literally) during incredibly difficult times for both Mark and myself.

We greatly appreciate the financial contributions for the study aids we have produced and will continue to produce for you. Mark has now lost all his in-person teaching work for what will probably end up being an entire year. I know that Zoom and Skype lessons are far from perfect, compared to the joy of being with others in a room, and pushing hands. However, if you are able to book sessions with Mark, and find them useful for your study, please do so. If T'ai Chi has helped you during difficult times as much as it has me, then know that booking screen sessions with Mark at this time really does help him stay afloat, in turn. My main concerns are making sure our teacher can continue teaching in the future, and can continue to do so in the present strange times. Also, that you can continue your T'ai Chi practice and study, at whatever level, and that it may nourish and sustain you. As always, do get in touch if you have any ideas or queries.

Best wishes to you all. Caro.

Thursday classes postponed until after lockdown

There will be no Thursday class this week as lockdown starts tonight, (midnight Wednesday) not Thursday at midnight as Mark thought.

03 November 2020

Tonight is the last Tooting class until after this lockdown

We have just been informed that the hall may not hold exercise or education classes during this next lockdown, which means T'ai Chi class will be on tonight 3rd November, but not run for the next four weeks. As soon as I have a date for return, I'll put it here.

121s by Skype are available with Mark.

121s in person may be possible, socially distanced, but we are waiting for clarity in the government rules.

Zoom classes continue each week with Caroline.

Thursday class in Hampton Court cancelled tonight

Due to just one person booking. It will run  next week if there is demand. Please contact Mark by next Tuesday if you'd like to come along.

Lots of news

Zoom classes are ongoing and are all online, including today's class. Join us on Wednesday mornings or download and use at your own leisure, £5 per session. Get in touch for links. I am recording a special class for next week as I will be in the woods on Wednesday... more details soon.

Students studying online, or stuck at home, if there is a resource you would like me or Mark to record, please get in touch, for instance, a form filmed from behind, a mirror image of something... let me know and I will try to sort that within a fortnight.

Mark's Tuesday classes resumed last night, 7-9pm at Trinity Church Tooting Large Hall. We had social distancing, hand gel, so much space and room, plus all windows and doors open. Masks were won by whoever wished to do so and we followed all church guidelines, the person responsible for safety at the halls visited us and was happy with the set up. You are very welcome to join us, and classes will continue as long as it is allowed by the church, who check guidelines daily and are responsible for the hall use. Each class is just cash / e-payment on the night £15 / £10, as we do not know if 'terms' will resume for some time. Everyone's safety is our concern, so we fully understand those who do not feel able to come. You are welcome to book a socially distanced 121 with Mark, or a Skype lesson if that appeals. It is also still warm enough to practice outside, so if you'd like to meet up at 2-3m distance in a park to do form, that would be ideal. Mark can also teach outside. (I am still not teaching 121s until the spring.)

On a personal note, it was just so brilliant to be moving in a room sticking to other people's movements. It was great to see everyone and to smile and laugh together. I missed you all!

Thursday class at Hampton Court will run weekly from tomorrow 7-9.30pm. Contact Mark to book a place. The class will run as long as it is legal and safe to do so.

We were just about to organise an alternative Aberdeenshire workshop venue when the rules changed yet again yesterday regarding Covid. Mark and Davina will be talking very soon and we will post a definitive message here this week. Sadly we have just heard that the October workshops and 121s have been cancelled due to renewed Covid restrictions. Thanks to Davina for all her hard work on the admin side finding alternatives. Mark will arrange something in Scotland as soon as conditions allow it.

Thanks to all who have been contributing to Mark and myself during this time, and to those paying for lessons. Banks transfers are best as Mark has had some Paypal issues. get in touch if you need either of our bank details.

Mark's classes postponed due to Covid 19 precautions

All Mark's in person classes are now postponed until after the outbreak.

We hope that by the time of the summer and autumn workshops that T'ai Chi will have resumed.

At the weekend we will be talking about whether to  / how to teach online, by video, recorded videos, Skype, Zoom etc.

People with positive experience of any particular method or platform are welcome to get in touch with either of us.

More here as soon as I know more. Stay safe and well, practice when you can.

News: Tooting Lido Class now cancelled plus contact details

Events and advice regarding Covid 19 has changed dramatically since even yesterday. I therefore regret but I must cancel my classes with immediate effect as the virus is spreading so quickly in London and I do not want to add to that unfolding disaster.

I am sorry for the short notice, but I have woken up to new advice as reported in The Guardian today. Over the weekend I will make videos and teach online as soon as I have found and tested a suitable platform, probably Zoom, as I have used this before and have an account, somewhere. Thanks in advance for your patience. Having been an 'in-person' person all my life, this will take a little adjustment, but I am willing to adapt.

Flexibility is quality of Tao...

What a strange time we are in. Please let any other SLSC or non-club T'ai Chi students know about the changes, I will prepare posters for the pool and venue later today and email them over to be printed and put around.

As soon as it is safe to do so I wish to continue teaching, same time and day. I will be back as soon as circumstances allow.

In the meantime you can email me at info at greatrivertaichi dot co dot uk and call or text on 07732 659104. I have films, clips and resources of everything we study and am happy to email them, Dropbox or message. I hope to find a way to have them online but password-protected soon. Both Mark and I still do not wish to put our work online willy-nilly, and thus be part of the endless competition...

Best wishes to you all, be well, Caro

Coronavirus updates re T'ai Chi classes

Great river and The T'ai Chi Centre students and friends, I do hope you are well and safe, wherever you are.

I am home to London 3 days early as I cancelled this weekend's Gothenburg sessions in consultation with the students, as the situation regarding public health advice in Sweden was changing very rapidly. I am very glad I made this choice as I do not wish anyone to get ill due to my lack of diligence. I miss the students and send you warmest greetings. BA price-gouged the flights and charged me a cool £550 to come home. Exploitation has many faces, sadly. Last month I arranged a few months sabbatical from teaching in Aberdeenshire, and now it seems I would have ghad to cancel the travel and workshops anyway due to outside forces. What strange times we live in.

I have been asked by a Swedish student to consider Skype sessions for those abroad and for those who have specific questions they would like to work on, or things they would like to see demonstrated. I will consider this all week and post something next weekend. I think given the current worldwide situation, this could be a good idea. I have not used Skype in this way before but I have enjoyed using Zoom, so watch this space, literally, and I will come up with something. I will also record any video clips students need and send them by Dropbox, just get in touch if there is something you need. My phone is perfectly good enough for this job. Flexibility is the movement of Tao, after all...

Mark's classes in London, and plan for the Summer and Autumn workshops are so far not changing, you are welcome to contact him if you have any questions.

My Tooting Lido classes will continue this week and I will ask the students if they would like to carry on weekly, or pause and resume after Easter break, as circumstances allow. The hall is hygienic, roomy and we all have plenty of space there. I provide hand gel and there are excellent hand wash facilities, so I am minded to turn up this week on 18th and see what folks think. We will however pause our study of partnerwork and continue with solo practice. There is plenty to be getting on with!

Lastly, spare of thought for the gig workers, including T'ai Chi teachers, artists, craftspeople, musicians, actors, workshop instructors and choir leaders, etc all around the world who teach and lead groups of people in person, and whose livelihoods are now very precarious. I am lucky, I have boat and lowish overheads, almost all my work is now cancelled, but I have plans in place, as I have always thought a situation like this would arise one day and prepared accordingly. The spring season is often the busiest time for makers and organisers of events, and suddenly this is all cancelled. If you are someone with a regular salary and and good healthcare, now is the time to be reaching out to friends whose work has dried up, and buying that vase from them you always wanted, or joining their Patreon, or booking a Skype lesson, and so on. I will be organising something in solidarity with my other self-employed friends over on my art life Instagram @foundandground and you are very welcome to have a look.

To all who read this, stay safe, check in with the vulnerable ,and be well. Get in touch any time.
