Tsubas

I have just ordered 7 plastic tsubas (guards for bokkens) with rubber domes (holders) for HRC students, they will cost £3 each, which is very good. This is so we can use the bokkens like sabres with guards during applications, and not mash our thumbs in the process. I have thrown away so many plastic tsubas over the years, when they have come with bokkens, thinking they were only useful in two-handed Japanese use. There are perils to being over tidy: I should have stuck them all in a drawer. I will have them for class next week, so we can practice the applications from 'A python moves about inside Mount K'ai'.
I would be happy to order a bunch for Mark's students, or for the Aberdeenshire posse, just get in touch.

In looking for these tsubas I have found Nine Circles, a specialist Japanese budo equipment supplier. I have yet to receive my order, but their bokkens, staffs (bo) and T'ai Chi swords look excellent. Also, they seem to stock heavy thick wooden staffs, and I know Duncan and other taller chaps have been looking for heavy enough staffs for their standing practice. Perhaps these will fit the bill. It may be worth ringing Nine Circles and getting a weight for them compared to the regular ones. I am well aware of the retails prices of all our weapons, shoes and clothing supplies, and Nine Circles do not seem expensive. Also, the quality of workmanship is usually very high, in my experience of  Japanese martial arts equipment.
