How we do what we do is of vital importance. The manner in which we do everyday things says so much and can be a place of real learning, if we have the courage to look. The trick is to be gentle with ourselves. I am not of the opinion that there is only one way to do things, or only one thing to do. It can be like stalking a rare animal that is a little shy, we need patience and stillness to see what it is we are really doing, and how we are doing it. Is it what we tell ourselves we are doing?
Is it possible to do exactly the right thing, in precisely the wrong way?
I love the way they say in the T'ai Chi Classics: 'This truly is not easy'.
From the Tao Te Ching: trans Cleary
A way can be a guide, but not a fixed path;
names can be given, but not permanent labels.
Thanks to Matt for the prompt.
