Uhuru / Uhura

Just found out in my latest etymological read (The Secret Life of Words by Henry Hitchens) that uhuru comes from Swahili and signifies an African nation's independence. If Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry knew this, and named his famous black female character for it, then he was even more forward-minded than we all thought. He also provided USA TV's first cross-racial kiss (between Kirk and Uhuru). I realise I may be becoming a bit of an anorak.

Anorak and Parka are, of course, both words for outer garments worn by tribes in the most northerly climes...
